This policy describes what the app does with information, in plain language. The same text is shown inside the app under Settings → Privacy → Privacy Policy, so it can be read without a connection.

Summary

• MapPilot has no accounts and no sign-in. We run no server of our own, so nothing you type or save in the app is ever sent to us.
• The app shows advertisements through Google AdMob. Google's advertising software collects some information about your device to deliver and measure ads. Where the law requires it, you are asked for consent first, and you can change your choice at any time in Settings.
• The app includes Google Firebase Analytics to count how features are used (for example "the Weather tool was opened"). It never receives your location, your searches, your places or anything you type. You can turn it off in Settings.
• To show maps, search places, plan routes and fetch weather, the app sends requests to free third-party services. Those requests necessarily reveal what you are looking at, for example the coordinates you search for or the map area you are viewing, to the service that answers them.

1. Data stored on your device

All of this stays on your device unless a section below says otherwise.

• Saved places and favourite cities — app database. Remove with Settings → Delete all my data.
• Recent searches — app database. Remove with Settings → Delete all my data.
• Trip history and saved routes — app database. Remove with Settings → Delete all my data.
• Translation history — app database. Remove with Settings → Delete all my data.
• Downloaded offline map regions — app storage. Remove in Offline Maps or with Settings → Delete all my data.
• Cached map tiles — app storage. Remove with Settings → Delete all my data.
• Settings (theme, language, units, voice guidance, usage-analytics choice) — app preferences. Remove with Android Settings → Apps → MapPilot → Storage → Clear storage.
• Advertising and consent state (your consent choices, when an ad was last shown) — app preferences, managed by Google's consent library and by the app's ad frequency rules.
• An undelivered download result (the name of a map region whose "download finished" notification could not be shown yet) — app preferences, for a few minutes only. See section 6.
• Map screenshots you save (Street View → save screenshot) — your Photos/Gallery, in the Pictures/MapPilot folder. These are your own files; delete them in your gallery app.

Uninstalling the app removes everything except the screenshots in your gallery.

Android's cloud backup and device-to-device transfer are disabled for this app, so none of this data is copied to Google's backup servers or to a new phone by the system.

2. Location

If you grant the location permission, the app uses your device's location to show where you are on the map, find nearby places, give navigation directions, and show local weather, air quality and compass/speed readings.

• Your location is used while you are using the app. There is no background location tracking.
• Your location is not sent to us — we have no server.
• Your coordinates are sent to the third-party services in section 3 when a feature needs them, for example to fetch the weather where you are or to calculate a route from your position.
• Your precise location is never sent to the advertising or analytics services described in sections 4 and 5. Google may estimate a coarse location from your IP address, as any internet service can.
• Trips and places are saved to your device only when you choose to save them.
• You can refuse or revoke the location permission at any time in Android Settings. Features that need it stop working; the rest of the app continues to function.

3. Third-party services the app contacts

Every internet request carries your device's IP address. The app sends no name, email or account identifier, because it holds none. Each service handles what it receives under its own privacy policy; we have no control over, and no access to, what they do with it.

• OpenStreetMap tile servers — standard map tiles. Receives the map area you are viewing.
• Esri (ArcGIS) — satellite, terrain and label layers. Receives the map area you are viewing.
• OpenTopoMap, CARTO, CyclOSM, Waymarked Trails, MeMoMaps — alternative map styles. Receive the map area you are viewing.
• Nominatim (OpenStreetMap) — place search and address lookup. Receives your search text, only when you submit a search, or coordinates for an address lookup.
• Your device's address-lookup service (Android Geocoder) — tried before Nominatim to turn a point on the map into an address. Receives the coordinates. On most devices this service is provided by Google Play services.
• OSRM (router.project-osrm.org) — route calculation. Receives the start, destination and any waypoints of a route.
• Open-Meteo — weather, forecasts, air quality and city search. Receives the coordinates you request, or the city name as you type it in the Weather and World Clock search boxes.
• download.mapsforge.org — offline map region downloads. Receives which region you download.
• World Bank — country economic data. Receives which country you view.
• flagcdn.com — country flag images. Receives which country's flag is shown.
• Wikimedia (upload.wikimedia.org) — photos in Wonders of the World and Famous Places. Receives which photos are shown.
• Google ML Kit (translation) — translation runs on your device. Language packs are downloaded from Google. The ML Kit library may also send usage and diagnostic metrics about the translation feature to Google, as described in Google's ML Kit terms.
• Google Play services (location) — the fused location provider determines your device's location; depending on your device's Google location settings, Google may process Wi-Fi and mobile-network signals for this under its own privacy policy.
• Your device's speech recogniser (usually Google) — voice input, only when you tap the microphone button. The audio you speak is handled by that service; the app receives only the recognised text. The app itself never records audio.
• Google AdMob and Google Firebase Analytics — described in sections 4 and 5.
• Google Play — checks for app updates, described in section 7.

4. Advertising (Google AdMob)

MapPilot is free and shows advertisements delivered by Google AdMob (the Google Mobile Ads SDK). Ads appear as labelled banners or cards on the Home page, the Tools page, the Weather page and the Wonder, Famous place and Country detail pages; occasionally as a full-screen ad when you finish with a screen and return to a main tab or to a list; and occasionally when you return to the app after using another app. Ads are never shown on top of the map, during turn-by-turn navigation, while you are typing, in the Privacy Policy or Terms screens, or in a search or results list.

Every feature of MapPilot is free whether or not you look at an ad. If you want fewer interruptions, Settings offers "Fewer ads for a while": you may choose to watch a video ad and, in return, MapPilot shows no full-screen ads for 30 minutes. It is entirely optional, it unlocks nothing, and nothing is taken away if you never use it. The only thing stored is the time the quiet period ends, on your device.

According to Google's published disclosure for this software, the Google Mobile Ads SDK automatically collects:

• your device's IP address, which Google may use to estimate a coarse location;
• interactions with ads and app launches;
• diagnostic information such as app launch time and crash-free operation of the ad component;
• device and account identifiers, including the Android advertising ID and the app set ID.

Google uses this to deliver, measure and, where you allow it, personalise ads, and for fraud prevention. All of it is encrypted in transit. Google's handling of this data is described at https://policies.google.com/privacy and https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

Consent. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and certain other regions, Google's User Messaging Platform shows a consent form before personalised ads can be requested. You can review or change your choices at any time under Settings → Privacy → Privacy choices (this row appears only where those choices apply to you). If you decline, the app may still show non-personalised or limited ads, or no ads at all.

Your controls. You can reset or delete your advertising ID and opt out of ads personalisation in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads. The app never shows an ad that is disguised as a map tool, a search result, a saved place or a navigation control.

5. Usage analytics (Google Firebase Analytics)

The app includes Google Firebase Analytics so that we can learn which features are used and whether they work. It is switched on by default and you can turn it off at any time under Settings → Privacy → Usage analytics; your choice is remembered. Where the consent form in section 4 applies to you and you have not consented to storing information on your device, usage analytics stays off regardless of the toggle.

What we log (coarse events, with no personal content):

• that the app was opened, and which screen or tool was opened;
• that a place search was submitted (never the search text);
• that a route was created, with the number of stops as a bucket such as "3 to 5" and whether it was an estimate (never the start, stops or destination);
• that navigation was started or completed;
• that an offline map download was started, completed or failed (never which region);
• that a place was saved (never its name or location);
• that the Privacy Policy or Terms were opened, and the outcome of the consent form;
• whether an ad loaded, failed or was shown, by format;
• whether an app update was offered, started or completed;
• whether the notification permission was granted.

What we never log: latitude or longitude, addresses, search text, route start or end points, saved place names, translated text, city names, or any other free text you type.

Identifiers. Firebase Analytics assigns a random app-instance ID to your installation. The app tells Firebase Analytics not to collect the Android advertising ID or the Android device ID (SSAID), and ad-personalisation signals from analytics are switched off. Google may derive a coarse location from your IP address. Data is encrypted in transit. Google's description of this software is at https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy.

Deleting analytics data. Settings → Delete all my data resets the app-instance ID and asks Firebase to delete the analytics data associated with it.

6. Notifications

The app can show a notification while an offline map region is downloading (with progress and a Cancel action) and when the download completes or fails. On Android 13 and later the app asks for the notification permission only when you start a download, and only once; if you decline, downloads still work and you can enable notifications later in Android Settings. The app sends no promotional, reminder or advertising notifications, and no notification comes from a server.

A small download can finish while that permission request is still on screen. If it does, the app keeps the region's name on your device for a few minutes so it can show you the result once you allow notifications; if you decline, or if the time passes, the note is discarded and nothing is shown.

7. App updates (Google Play)

If you installed MapPilot from Google Play, the app may check with Google Play whether a newer version is available and offer to download it in the background. The check and the download are performed by Google Play under Google's privacy policy. Installing the update is always your choice. Builds not installed from Google Play cannot use this feature.

8. Opening Google Maps

Some features (for example Nearby Places categories, Live Traffic, Street View and "Open in Google Maps" navigation) hand off to the Google Maps app or website with the place or coordinates you chose. This only ever happens when you tap a control that says so. Once you leave MapPilot, Google's privacy policy applies.

9. Permissions the app requests

• Location (fine and coarse) — your position on the map, navigation, nearby places, local weather, compass, speedometer. Optional; the app runs without it.
• Notifications (Android 13 and later) — offline map download progress and results. Optional; requested only when you start a download.
• Internet and network state — loading maps and data; detecting when you are offline. Required.
• Foreground service (data sync) — keeps a long offline map download running with a visible notification. Granted automatically.
• Advertising ID — added by Google's advertising software so that ads can be delivered and measured. Granted automatically; you can reset the ID in Android Settings.

The app requests no other permissions. It never accesses your contacts, call logs, SMS, camera or microphone.

10. Deleting your data

Settings → Privacy → Delete all my data permanently removes saved places, favourite cities, recent searches, trip history, saved routes, translation history, downloaded offline maps and cached map tiles from your device, and resets the analytics app-instance ID.

Your app settings (theme, language, units, voice guidance, analytics choice) are kept so the app remains usable. Downloaded translation language packs are kept — they are app resources from Google, identical for every user, contain nothing about you, and would otherwise have to be downloaded again. Map screenshots you saved to your gallery are your own files and are not touched. Your advertising consent choices are kept; change them under Privacy choices, or reset your advertising ID in Android Settings.

Because we store nothing about you on any server, there is nothing further for us to delete on our side. Data held by Google (advertising, analytics, Play) is subject to Google's privacy policy and the controls Google provides.

11. Children

MapPilot is a general-audience navigation app. It is not directed at children under 13 (or the age of digital consent where you live) and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Ads are requested without child-directed treatment.

12. Security

Data stored by the app stays in its private storage, which other apps cannot read. Network requests to Google services are encrypted in transit; requests to the map, routing and weather services use HTTPS. No transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of services we do not operate.

13. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated text will appear inside the app with a new "Last updated" date, and at the same public address as the version linked from the app's Google Play listing.
